A Piece of Me

"Solo" Fashion Show Opening 2010
Once Upon A Time, in August 1998, I experienced my first ballet lesson in a dance academy and have been training to be a dancer ever since. School, Train, Sleep, Repeat … That had been my schedule for as long as I can remember until 2005, when my family couldn’t afford it anymore. A week later the owner called and offered me a full scholarship. “You have potential and I want to train you personally,” he said and offered me a space in his dance company. My preparation amplified with ballet, jazz, modern dance, hip hop, tap, singing and even musical theatre.

When I turned 15 the company toured to New York for the summer to train in Broadway Dance Center, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater and Steps; where several instructors came up to the owner with job offers for me, but he denied them because he wanted me to have a proper dance education.

After high school graduation I attended New World School of the Arts to get a Bachelor’s Degree in Fine Arts majored in Dance. One year later I realized my passion for dancing was just that, a passion, not a career I wanted to pursue. I still love it but the life of a dancer is not as glamorous backstage. I met dancers with two additional jobs, debts and little food in their fridge. That is not the life I wanted.

I have always been a straight A student mainly because my mother always threatened to eliminate my dance classes if I came home with a low grade. “School first, then dance” is what she would always say. So naturally, I was a nerd. Now don't get me wrong, I completely thank her for it. I found Math, English, and Science to be my favorite subjects so when the time came to decide what I was going to major next, I chose Biology.

I still continue dancing and love every minute of it. It’s a huge part of my life and it will always be.
